Antique Chinese Imperial Brown Silk Peony Forbidden Stitch Butterfly Embroidery Wedding Skirt
This antique Chinese Imperial brown silk peony forbidden stitch butterfly embroidery wedding skirt dates from the late 19th century during the Qing Dynasty. It is made of a qiuxiangse (tawny incense) brown color silk fabric, with varying shades of blue forbidden stitch Peking knot peony flower center and colorful raised padded satin stitch hand embroidery work of peonies, flowers, butterflies. The butterfly represents immortality, long life, young love and the peony flower is a symbol of love, affection and representative of good luck. This Chinese Imperial color court Manchu nobles women's wedding skirt has a wrap around style, with a wide woven linen waistband, side pleat embroidered flowers, black silk trim edging, is fully lined in a pale yellow silk fabric and has a "Made in China" stamp, black ink Chinese calligraphy characters inside the waistband. The skirt measures 39 inches long, with a 46 inch wide waist across the top. It is in good condition, with only some slight faint fade discoloration and some fraying of the silk trim edging in areas (see close-ups). This is truly a rare and wonderful piece of antique Chinese wearable art!
