Antique Fur, Horn & Beautifully Carved Cow Bone Needle Case
Continental * Circa 1890s
This unusual antique needle case has a top in the form of a deer hoof with the sides covered with fur. The hoof is carved of horn and the bottom has a steel horseshoe with faceted steel "nails" holding in on. The bottom is made of cow (bovine) bone and is beautifully carved showing a stag in the forest. It's in the Black Forrest style with brown pigment "antiquing" so that the high spots of the carving stand out.
The condition is amazing. The fur is intact and it has no chips, cracks or loss. The top fits on securely and it measures 3 1/4" long. This would have been a souvenir item (probably from Germany or Switzerland) in the late 19th century. Those are the two countries known for this style of carving. A pair of knitting needle guards with furry hooves like this are shown on pp. 162 & 180 of Nerylla Taunton's book
