Description
A rare and unusual steel needle holder; of ingenious design it slides open to reveal 12 slender steel needles inside. The needles do not have an 'eye' in them; I believe they are the kind for knitting circular items. The case is decorated with marble in the 'Pietra Dura' technique which was a kind of mosaic that was especially popular on Grand Tour Souvenirs in the 18th and 19th Century.
This example is in beautiful condition and has the name 'Karlsbad' hand engraved to one end; this could refer to Karlsbad, Germany or what is now known as Karlovy in the modern day Czech Republic which was a popular spa town on the Grand Tour route.
A great addition to any antique sewing or knitting collection and would be lovely to use as it's still an eminently practical item!
SIZE: Measures 24cm long, extends up to 31cm. The 12 needles are all the same length.
CONDITION: Excellent antique condition. All 12 needles present. Sliding mechanism works well. Minor wear commensurate with age but this is minimal. Marble is perfect; no chips.
RETURNS: All sales final; no returns or refunds. Please see photos and do ask any questions.
POSTAGE: Free inside the US only
